pH measurements with separate electrodes require the use of a measurement electrode and a reference electrode. The latter will retain a constant, stable potential during the measurements.
– Silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrode.
This comprises a glass body containing a silver wire partly covered with a film of AgCl and plunging in a solution of KCl 1 mol/L.
Advantages of KCl 1 mol/L:
-> Less crystallization if the liquid evaporates on the membrane because the KCl concentration is quite low
-> Reduced risk of clogging the junction
=> Extension of the electrode’s life span
– Electrode equipped with a porous ceramic junction.
– Easy-to-use junction.
– Widely used even for pH measurements at high temperatures (> 60°C).
The choice of the reference electrode depends above all on the experimental conditions for your measurements.
This reference electrode should be used with a measurement electrode (BV41A/H or XV41) for correct pH measurement.
